Ask anyone in Kuala Lumpur which restaurant serves the best roast pork (siew yoke) and Restoran Wong Kee aka Wong Mee Kee (王美记) will definitely be named. Located in an old-style corner coffeeshop along Jalan Nyonya in Pudu, Wong Mee Kee is owned by Robert Wong, who is also conferred with Datukship (Malaysian honorific). Due to its reputable roast pork, CNN Travel had listed Wong Mee Kee as Kuala Lumpur’s top 20 restaurants in 2012. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to experience this delicacy with my loved ones one fine day.
What makes this already reputable roast pork even more exclusive is that, they will only serve it between 12.30pm and 3pm. They will not entertain any orders before or after that, no matter who you are or how much you order.
Despite being known for its somewhat ignorant attitude, customers still throng the restaurant. You’re only allowed to place your order with the Indonesian maid, who will just nod her head in acknowledgement without jotting down. Worried that our orders were forgotten, I tried ordering again with the lady owner, but to my disappointment, she refused to take them. My last resort was to ask hubby to remind the Indonesian maid again and she confidently told him that she remembered our orders. Though we were quite skeptical with her reply, all we could do was to wait patiently; meanwhile, fill our hungry stomachs with free flow pork bone soup.
We waited for a good 30 minutes and our orders came exactly as requested. A big respect to the foreign worker for being so efficient at work. We ordered roast pork for 2 pax and I was amazed at the thickness of each slice of pork, which was in stark contrast to the ones elsewhere that were usually thinly sliced. I was completely blown away by its succulent texture as well as the crispness of its overlying skin, with just the right amount of fat in it. So mouthwatering meat that it is undoubtedly the best roast pork I’ve ever tasted.
Besides roast pork, we also had the roast chicken, though I wouldn’t say it’s something that extraordinary. The meat was soft with a fragrant layer of skin over it, but definitely it wasn’t the best that I’ve tasted.
And of course, a great meal comes with a great price. For two servings of roast pork, we were charged RM34. That I must really admit is exorbitant because it doesn’t correlate at all with the size of its portion!
Nevertheless, it’s truly a great honour to be able to savour such a delicious roast pork – roasted to perfection. Oh, bear in mind that parking may be notoriously bad in that area (Tip: consider GrabCar or Uber). Also, if you hate the gruelling waiting time, consider coming after 1.30pm once the lunch crowd has died off.
