Almost everyone knows that Ipoh is famous for its fat, juicy and crunchy bean sprouts. As a matter of fact, these bean sprouts are best paired with the tender, steamed chicken. Therefore, it’s not surprising to hear that tourists would look for a good chicken rice shop whenever they step into this humble little city of Ipoh.
Since young, I’ve been frequenting this shop that serves arguably the best Hainanese chicken rice. For those who don’t know, Hainanese chicken rice is a dish adapted from the early Chinese immigrants who originated from Hainan province in southern China. The chicken is prepared in accordance with traditional Hainanese methods, which involve poaching the entire chicken at sub-boiling temperatures. The resulting stock is skimmed off and some of the fat and liquid, along with ginger, garlic and pandan leaves are used in cooking the rice, thus, producing an oily, flavourful rice sometimes known as “oily rice”.
Located at Jalan Ali Pitchay, one can easily locate this unassuming restaurant. At peak hours, customers can be seen flooding into the restaurant, waiting for their turn to be served. But fret not, the waiting time is pretty short as its workers are extremely efficient in serving the customers.
Juicy and tender poached chicken, served with light soy sauce, a dash of sesame oil and garnished with fresh scallion, it’s without a doubt the best taste one would ever savour. Not only the perfectly poached chicken is mouth-watering, even the fluffy grains of “oily rice” is fragrant and flavourful enough to be eaten just on its own.
Besides the poached chicken, there are also many other side dishes that you can have with the chicken rice. To be honest, there is nothing extraordinary with the side dishes. But they are good enough to satisfy one’s craving for some home-cooked dishes.
Besides that, customers are also privileged to enjoy its home-made soup of the day completely free of charge.
Restoran Hin Loong is definitely a true gem where only locals know about. I have no qualms recommending this restaurant to those who crave for authentic Hainanese chicken rice. The entire meal for three persons only costed us RM21.90, without the 6% GST and service charge.
